â??Iole Manakuke
â??Iole Manakuke
Description: The â??Iole Manakuke, or Indian Mongoose, was originally brought to the Islands back in 1883. It was believed that the mongooses (no, not mongeese) would help control the rising Rat population on the Islands. Unfortunately, the mongoose is mostly active during the day while the rats were active at night and they didnâ??t have much of an impact on the rats. The Mongoose also enjoys bird eggs and had a negative impact on the bird population. The Mongoose found itâ??s way to most of the islands. Only Kauaâ??i and Lanaâ??i are thought to be free of the mongoose and because of this those islands have more birds.
