Horeshoe Curve is undoubtedly one of the most famous railroad locations in the nation, and one of the busiest mainlines in the land. The Pennsylvania Railroads massive mountain crossing is spectacular, awe-inspiring, and the constant stream of trains struggling upgrade rarely stops. The 220 degree arc that forms Horseshoe Curve comprises two curves the north side has a radius of 637 feet while the south side tightens to 609 feet. It was opened on February 15th, 1854. -- johnstownwildfire
Requiring more skill of the engineer is managing a heavy long train coning down the hill. It is a steep grade and the train pushes the locomotive ahead of it. Gingerly apply the brakes and watch the slack run out in the couplers. I was trackside when they had it pull out then bunch up again, on scanner heard trainman on the ground comment THATLL TEST THOSE DRAWBARS! -- lunar-tic
